The percentage of all respondents planning no large purchases has doubled from last year, rising from 11% to 21%. A starker decline included interest in house remodeling — dropping from 30% to 22%. Vacation and travel, which was the most popular category last year at 66%, also dipped substantially to 50% this year. After a tough economic year, consumers are less willing to spend on discretionary purchases, a home, car or furniture next year. (Related data continued on page 12.)
