Over the past 12 months, in which of these categories has your household
spent more than the prior 12 months?
Last year
This year
Looking ahead, projected consumer spending is down
in all listed categories — aside from "none" or "other."
The percentage of all respondents planning no large
purchases has doubled from last year, rising from 11%
to 21%.
A starker decline included interest in house remodeling
— dropping from 30% to 22%. Vacation and travel, which
was the most popular category last year at 66%, also
dipped substantially to 50% this year. After a tough
economic year, consumers are less willing to spend
on discretionary purchases, a home, car or furniture
next year. (Related data continued on page 12.)
