With load volumes slowly recovering throughout 2023,
respondents mostly expect the trend to continue or
remain the same.
An approximately equal number of respondents
expect volumes to stay the same in 2024 (39% of all
respondents and 41% of shippers) or increase (40% of
both shippers and all respondents). Of those that expect
growth, though, that increase is expected to be slight.
Fortunately, most respondents don't anticipate a reverse
in load volumes in 2024.
Whether respondents see growth, decline or stagnation
in volumes, consumer spending is projected to be the
biggest driver behind it. Around 66% of all respondents
and 69% of shippers highlight its importance. A slight
surge in consumer spending may come as a surprise to
others after economic strain for consumers in 2023.
Inventories are the second most identified catalyst for
load volume changes, particularly among shippers at
44% compared to 38% of all respondents. Interest rates
are another key concern, noted by 35% of all respondents
and 31% of shippers.
Totals may not equal 100% due to rounding.
