There is almost a draw between those who believe there
will be li le change to the current surplus in industry
capacity and those who think it will tighten. Forty percent
of all respondents and 41% of shippers anticipate truck
capacity will remain the same in 2024. Tighter capacity
ahead, though, is the opinion of 40% of all respondents
and 39% of shippers. Most of those see slightly tighter
capacity coming. Few anticipate remarkably tighter or
looser capacity.
Excess capacity cannot last forever, and many market
analysts predict that carriers will eventually be pushed
out of the market. Survey respondents largely mirror
this sentiment as a factor for a change in trucking
capacity. They most often cite the expectation that
capacity will decrease as rates are low, leading drivers
to exit the market. This view is held by 43% of all
respondents and 36% of shippers. A decrease in demand
for transportation, potentially leading more drivers and
carriers to leave the market, is the second most cited
factor, with 33% of all respondents and 32% of
shippers agreeing.
