What is CTPAT and Why is it Important?
Keeping freight safe and secure is an essential part of what we do at Echo. In an often-unpredictable environment such as cross-border transportation, having additional knowledge and tools to leverage in this process makes a significant difference.
That’s why Echo became certified as a 3PL partner in the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (CTPAT) program. But what does that mean?
What is CTPAT?
CTPAT was created in 2001 and is a partnership between certified partners and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This partnership, which includes more than 11,400 members, is based on an agreement with CBP to protect the supply chain by identifying security gaps and creating and implementing security procedures. Organizations that apply to CTPAT are required to address a variety of security topics and provide specific action plans to ensure security is aligned in the supply chain.
With a CTPAT certification, Echo leverages a multitude of unique benefits. These benefits for our CTPAT certified clients include, among others:
- Access to Advanced Qualified Unlading Approval (AQUA) lane
- A reduced number of CBP examinations for cross-border freight
- Front of the line inspections and shorter wait times at the border
- The expertise of a Supply Chain Security Specialist assigned to the company
- Access to the Free and Secure Trade (FAST) lanes at the border
- Business resumption priority following a natural disaster or terrorist attack
- Priority consideration at CBP’s industry-focused Centers of Excellence and Expertise
Though the application is voluntary, becoming certified in the CTPAT program is a rigorous process, aimed at determining that every member adheres to a strict security protocol and best practices. By becoming certified, companies demonstrate their commitment to keeping the supply chain safe and their clients’ essential products secure.
Why is CTPAT Important for Cross-Border Transportation?
As a CTPAT member, a company must create and implement a self-assessment security process. This is important because it includes identifying any added enhancements and updates to existing supply chain programs. It also establishes a process for documenting and regularly updating security protocols on a regular basis.
As a true partnership, by adhering to these principles outlined in the CTPAT program, CBP provides certified organizations with training, reduced cargo exams, and the sharing of information. Especially when it comes to cross-border freight, staying informed and having the support of a secure government agency helps ensure the crossing process is as efficient and safe as possible.
Echo is one of just a few 3PLs to have been able to earn a CTPAT certification. After leveraging cross-border solutions for nearly a decade, Echo is proud to have established facilities on both sides of the southern border. With offices in Mexico City, Monterrey, and Laredo, Texas, Echo is well equipped to handle any cross-border challenges that may arise. Regardless of the freight mode, Echo’s goal remains the same: to simplify the transportation process for our clients and carriers. By adding a CTPAT certification to our list of tools, Echo is better able to provide you with the efficiency and security you need to move goods across the border with ease.
