How Shippers and Carriers Can Prepare for CVSA’s Upcoming 2019 Roadcheck
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) will conduct its annual International Roadcheck June 4-6, 2019. During the three-day enforcement event, CVSA-certified inspectors will perform roadside inspections of commercial motor vehicles and driver compliance. Historically, the CVSA Roadcheck limits capacity and shippers may see longer transit times.

The Roadcheck Is a Targeted Enforcement Program
During this 72-hour period, 15 trucks or buses on average are inspected every minute across North America. While its focus is on safety, the Roadcheck is also designed to provide educational opportunities to the industry and general public. Each year, the inspection emphasizes specific violations ranging from inadequate brake systems to improper cargo securement and unacceptable transportation of hazardous materials.
During the 2018 Roadcheck, enforcement personnel conducted nearly 68,000 driver and vehicle safety inspections and identified over 11,000 vehicles with infractions. The Roadcheck led to 21.6 percent of inspected commercial vehicles and 3.9 percent of inspected drivers being placed “out of service.”
Focus on Steering and Suspension in 2019
Tips for carriers: This year, the CVSA will place an emphasis on steering components and suspension systems. Carriers can avoid being placed out of service by taking preliminary steps to meet industry safety standards. We know Roadcheck is a challenging time for your drivers. Extended inspection times and clogged up traffic might find you needing freight at unusual times or outside your normal network.
Tips for shippers: Prepare for the upcoming Roadcheck by:
- Including longer lead times to source trucks
- Building in flexibility to delivery dates
- Adjusts shipping dates to pick up the week before Roadcheck or after Thursday (6/6)
